DAICON IV OPENING CEREMONY ANIMATION:
—
A new anime series started this year, Getsumen To Heiki Miina. It’s a spin off of the phenomenom of geek comfort blanketry that is Densha Otoko. GONZO produced an animated opening for that drama which was a heavy homage of the Daicon IV opening ceremony animation that pretty much made GAINAX’s name. Even down to getting ELO’s “Twilight” as the music. And GONZO’s homage is a pretty good piece of animation. In fact let’s take a look at it:
But you know, it’s one thing to do a throw away homage/reference/parody, it’s another to then actually make the TV series. The layers of meta-fiction piling now on are mind boggling. Especially whey you consider the original Daikon IV animation is packed full of parody in the first place. Obviously from a money making POV, it’s an obvious good idea. But creatively it’s hard to see anything good coming out of this. Particularly when you consider this is GONZO making it, a studio with a bad reputation for rapidly deteriorating series, possibly due to undertaking far too many projects a year. Here’s the uninspiring OP for the show:
I was aware of the homage to Daicon on FLCL but had never since heard much about it. This has been a very illuminating experience as I can now more concretely grasp the amazing history of anime!
