Asleep at the wheel of popular music #2

As Henry Kelly would say I’m playing catch up. Here’s three bands I knew nothing about going into the albums.

Deerhunter – Microcastle

This is my sort of thing, layered indie rock with frail fragile vocals. Not super-catchy, but perfectly listenable.

Fleet Foxes – Fleet Foxes

At first listen I thought this was going to be weak folk rock, lacking the weirdness or charisma of say, Circulus or Banhart. However once the harmonising kicked in it was lifted to a higher plane. It’s all rather lovely, if lacking in any danger.

Fucked Up – The Chemistry Of Common Life

Opening with a flute(?) solo again made me fear weak folk rock, but then the guitars hit. And then the screaming. And it’s awesome. Musically, this is what punk should have sounded like after Sugar’s Beaster.
