Who knows how many kids developed an Oedipus complex after this show? For this is a show that decides to make the sex symbol of the show the mother of one of the leads (who the kids watching are supposed to identify with, and thus buy the toys and videogames). True, she’s wearing a mask and wig disguise when she’s the sex symbol, but she’s the kid’s mum nonetheless. SPOILERS btw.
That odd decision aside, this is fun little mecha show, one that seems to be Sunrise trying to feel out new franchises for the decade. As such it has the creative team behind one their 90s hits Future GPX Cyber Formula on it – Mitsuo Fukuda & Chiaki Morosawa. More on them later.
It didn’t end up being that big a hit, and the Gear Fighting concept wasn’t revived. More Sunrise grasping for magic to come in later years.
