Lum-A-Day 084 – Terror! Attack of the Killer Potatoes!

Another Twilight Zone/Outer Limits/Alfred Hitchcock presents homage, as Cherry introduces a chilling tale. About potatoes.

The gang are staying at Mendou’s lodge in the mountains. When the tororo potato that Lum is supposed to be grating disappears she comes to the conclusion it ran away. While they others laugh at the notion, it turns out to be correct. Soon the lodge finds itself under attack by hundreds of the tubers. They try to defeat them by eating them, but there are too many. Eventually they have to flee and the lodge collapses under the weight of the potatoey assault.

The gang’s flight is blocked by a giant potato, but as the sun rises, they cease their movement. With their starchy pursuers immobile they decide to make their way round the mountain, first by climbing, then by raft. Of course riding a raft in a cartoon means only one thing…

WATERFALL!

They then get kind of lost walking round the mountain, and I’m sure you can guess the final punchline. Yes, they end up back at Mendou’s lodge just as the sun goes down…

Not played as straight as some of these genre homages are, this is a fun little episode. The animation has a lot of motion, and while it’s not as adeptly executed as last episode, there’s some nice touches here and there.
