Lum-A-Day 110 – Unremovable Magic Lipstick

Conveniently forgetting the episode where they actually kissed, Lum hatches a plan to get Ataru to kiss her for the first time. Meanwhile Shinobu, Ryuu and some generic schoolgirls are discussing first kisses, when Ryuu discovers the existance lipstick for the first time. And to even things out on the gender front, we get Megane fantasing that he’ll get his first kiss from Lum, before going insane and literally howling at the moon.

So what is Lum’s plan? Well, she makes some super science lipstick that will make the lips of whoever is wearing it attract to one another. So she puts some on, but Ataru is harder to catch than she thinks. When he realises what it does (after she accidentally scrawls Ten’s face with it), he pretends to throw it away, but secretly keeps it for himself.

The next day he gives it to Ryuu to wear, before putting it on himself. This doesn’t result in the kiss he’s expecting but a punch in the face from Ryuu, before Lum arrives still wearing the lipstick. With the secret of the lipstick revealed the entire class wants to use it – the girls to use on Mendou, the boys to use on Lum.

Naturally, they have not thought through the problems inherent in these plans. And so, of course, Mendou and Ataru end up kissing. Then Ataru and Cherry (don’t ask!). Despite this, soon everyone has the lipstick on, turning the class once again into a zombie film. After Ryuu and Shinobu end up kissing, the pair start throwing the boys into one another’s lips as revenge for them mocking them.

After everyone gets the obligatory electroshock from Lum, she finally gets her kiss from Ataru later in the day, albeit through the glass of the noodle store window.

The episode starts strong, carries on strong, then the ending sort of fizzles out both in terms of story and animation (lots of recycled footage when Ryuu and Shinobu beat up the boys). Still, from a story perspective, the current team still clearly love the Stormtroopers, and Megane in particular, and that is indeed a good thing.
