Gainax grasp the zeitgeist by the udders and milk for all it’s worth, with this robot maid show. While this concept has been done before, indeed in this same year, even when peddling blatantly opportunistic shows like this, Gainax are clearly miles better than the m.o.e.s of the world. When people think of cartoons about robot maids, it’s Mahoromatic that’s going to be remembered over the Steel Angel Kurumis and Hand Maid Mays of the world.
The manga of Kurumi and Mahoromatic both seem to have come out in ’98. Was the time simply right for tales of warbot maids or was one copying the other?
