#83 – Hikaru no Go

Hey kids, it's something I've seen. Albeit a tiny, tiny portion.

It's a show about the game of Go, and the manga proved to be so popular as to spawn a revival in the game's popularity. The story is of Hikaru, a school kid who finds a haunted Go board and meets the ghost of a Heian era Go player called Sai who teaches him to play/possesses him and sports manga related larks ensue. I've only seen the first 3 episodes, so that's all I can tell you. Despite not approaching Akagi levels of manly tension and awesomeness, it looked to be a good sports story.

The manga was written by Yumi Hotta and drawn by Takeshi Obata. Obata would go on to illustrate Death Note, and to get arrested last week for possessing an illegal knife.

The manga and anime is out in the US via Viz Media. As usual for a Viz DVD release of a long running (75 eps) TV show, the value for money is non existant (four episode volumes for $25), so avoid until they release a boxset. And then wait until that boxset gets knocked down in price in a sale.
